Inaugural Session of The Celestial Earth’s 12th Foundation Day Conference Emphasizes India’s Role in Climate Adaptation
The Celestial Earth (TCE) annual conference, "Pathways to Resilience: Climate Adaptation & Nature-Based Solutions," occurred on 9th January 2025 in New Delhi. The Inaugural Session was initiated with a welcoming speech by The Celestial Earth's Founder CEO Dr. Tania Bhattacharya, who emphasized the urgent need for climate adaptation in developing nations like India. Dr. Bhattacharya highlighted adaptation as essential for building resilience against intensifying climate challenges.
Chief Guest Smt. Rajashree Ray (Economic Advisor, MoEFCC, GOI) underscored India's critical role in achieving global SDGs and championed leadership in climate financing. She showcased India’s renewable energy progress (46% in 2024), the launch of the first national adaptation plan across nine states, and the integration of ecosystem-based approaches to combat floods, droughts, and heatwaves.
Keynote speaker Shri Pradeep Tharakan (Director, Asian Development Bank) addressed the global temperature milestone of 1.5°C in 2024, emphasizing that mitigation alone is insufficient. He highlighted Kerala's vulnerability, ADB’s adaptation initiatives, and the urgent need for scaled-up investments to address India's climate risks.
The ceremonial lamp-lighting was conducted by Dr. Tania Bhattacharya, Dr. Anindya Bhattacharya, Dr. RR Rashmi, Shri Pradeep Tharakan, Smt. Rajashree Ray, and Dr. Madhu Verma.
The conference laid the foundation for collaborative innovation and strategic actions, positioning India as a global leader in climate adaptation and resilience.
